Equalitarian

/ɪˌkwɒlɪˈteəriən/ adjective

Definition

Advocating or supporting the belief that all people should have equal rights, privileges, and opportunities; favoring social equality.

Etymology

From equality + -arian (follower of, one devoted to). The -arian suffix comes from Latin and creates nouns and adjectives. Equalitarian is a variant of egalitarian, both meaning the same thing.

Kelly Says

Equalitarian' and 'egalitarian' are near-perfect synonyms, but 'egalitarian' won out because it derives from French égal, making it sound more sophisticated and intellectual—language prestige often determines which synonym survives.
