Eriophyes

/ˌɛrioʊˈfaɪiz/ noun

Definition

A genus of extremely tiny spider-like mites that live on plants and can cause damage to leaves and buds, often visible only under a microscope.

Etymology

From Greek 'erion' (wool) and 'phytos' (plant), meaning 'plant-wool' mites. These mites are among the smallest arthropods and were formally classified in the 19th century as microscopy improved.

Kelly Says

Eriophyid mites are so tiny that thousands can live on a single plant leaf without visible damage until they overwhelm it—they're invisible farm raiders, and farmers sometimes can't even see the enemy destroying their crops!
