Definition
An artificial international auxiliary language created in 1887 by L.L. Zamenhof, designed to be easy to learn and politically neutral.
Etymology
From the pseudonym 'Doktoro Esperanto' (Doctor Hopeful) used by creator L.L. Zamenhof, derived from the Esperanto word 'esperi' meaning 'to hope'. The language name literally means 'one who hopes', reflecting its optimistic goal of global communication.
Kelly Says
Esperanto was designed to be learned in just 150 hours compared to thousands for natural languages, using 16 simple grammar rules with no exceptions. Ironically, this 'universal' language now has its own culture and even native speakers - children born into Esperanto-speaking families who learn it as their first language.
