Essorant

/ˈɛs.ɔr.ənt/ adjective

Definition

In heraldry, describing a bird depicted with wings spread and rising upward, as if taking flight.

Etymology

From French 'essorant,' derived from Old French 'essorer' meaning 'to soar' or 'to rise up,' from Latin 'exaurare' (ex- 'out' + aurare 'to air').

Kelly Says

Medieval heralds loved this term because an essorant bird on a coat of arms symbolized freedom, aspiration, and strength—it's the visual language of nobility frozen in a single dynamic moment!
