Definition
The quality of being worthy of respect or admiration; the state of being esteemed or valued highly.
Etymology
From estimable (worthy of esteem) + -ness (suffix forming abstract nouns). Estimable comes from Latin 'aestimare' meaning 'to value or appraise.' The -ness suffix transformed the adjective into an abstract noun expressing the quality itself.
Kelly Says
The suffix '-ness' is one of English's most productive tools for turning feelings and qualities into countable concepts—it lets us talk about abstract ideas as if they're things we can weigh and measure, which is why so many English words end this way.
