Definition
Strife, conflict, or quarreling; contention between parties.
Etymology
From Old French 'estrif', derived from 'estriver' meaning 'to quarrel'. Related to the modern English word 'strife', which eventually replaced this form.
Kelly Says
'Estrif' and 'strife' are actually the same word at different stages—English speakers gradually dropped the initial 'es-' prefix because it became redundant.
