Definition
An organism whose cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus and other specialized membrane-bound organelles. This includes all plants, animals, fungi, and protists.
Etymology
From Greek 'eu' meaning 'true' and 'karyon' meaning 'nut' or 'kernel'. The term was introduced to contrast with prokaryotes, emphasizing the presence of a 'true nucleus' enclosed by a nuclear membrane.
Kelly Says
Every eukaryotic cell is essentially a bustling city with specialized districts! The nucleus is like city hall, mitochondria are power plants, and the endoplasmic reticulum is like a highway system connecting everything together.
