Definition
Describing a body of water or ecosystem that is rich in nutrients and supports abundant plant and animal life, often leading to oxygen depletion.
Etymology
From Greek eu- (good) + trophē (nourishment), originally referring to well-nourished systems, but now used in ecology to describe nutrient-rich waters that can become unhealthy.
Kelly Says
Eutrophic lakes might sound great because they're 'well-fed,' but too many nutrients actually kill fish by causing algae blooms that use up all the oxygen—it's like overfeeding an aquarium!
