Definition
A formal funeral ceremony or burial rites performed to honor a dead person.
Etymology
From Latin exequiae, plural of exequi meaning 'to follow out' or 'to execute.' The word evolved from ex- (out) and sequi (to follow), originally referring to the procession following a deceased person.
Kelly Says
The word exequies is almost always used in plural form—even though it refers to one funeral—making it one of English's fascinating exceptions to normal pluralization rules, similar to how we say 'clothes' rather than 'cloths.'
