Definition
To smuggle or remove something (especially secret information or military personnel) secretly from a place, country, or organization.
Etymology
From Latin 'ex-' (out) + modern 'filtrate' (filtered liquid or substance). Formed in 20th-century military and espionage contexts, where 'infiltrate' (to enter secretly) was reversed as 'exfiltrate' (to exit secretly).
Kelly Says
Exfiltrate is a Cold War-era word that emerged when military strategists needed a term for the opposite of infiltration—getting spies, defectors, or stolen documents OUT secretly—and they borrowed chemistry's 'filtrate' terminology to sound more official.
