Definition
A student who receives financial support (a scholarship) at a school or university.
Etymology
From exhibition (a historical British university grant) + -er. In medieval Oxford and Cambridge, 'exhibitions' were modest scholarships, and the student receiving one was called an exhibitioner.
Kelly Says
This is a distinctly British educational term that's largely historical—it shows how words can develop very specific meanings in particular institutions and become outdated when those institutions change their funding systems.
