Definition
A medicine that helps clear mucus and phlegm from the lungs and airways by making it thinner and easier to cough up.
Etymology
From expectorate (to cough up and spit out mucus) plus -ant. Expectorate comes from Latin ex- (out) + pectoralis (relating to the chest), literally 'from the chest.' The word entered medical English in the 17th century.
Kelly Says
Guaifenesin, found in most over-the-counter cough syrups, is the most common expectorant—it's been used for centuries, originally extracted from a South American tree called guaiac. Modern chemistry just gave it a fancier name.
