Exponentiating

/ˌɛkspəˈnɛn.ʃi.eɪ.tɪŋ/ verb

Definition

The process of repeatedly multiplying a number by itself a certain number of times, shown with a small raised number called an exponent.

Etymology

From Latin 'exponere' (to set forth) + 'exponent' (one who sets forth). The mathematical meaning developed in the 17th century when mathematicians needed to describe repeated multiplication clearly using symbols.

Kelly Says

Exponentiating is why populations explode so quickly—rabbits reproducing create exponential growth, doubling their numbers each generation. This same pattern explains why compound interest makes your savings grow faster and faster over time.
