Expression

/ɪkˈsprɛʃən/ noun

Definition

A way of showing what you think or feel, especially through words, the face, or art. In math, it is a group of symbols that represent a value.

Etymology

From Latin *expressio* ‘a pressing out, representation’, from *exprimere* ‘to press out’. It kept the sense of bringing something inner to the outside.

Kelly Says

Your facial expressions are tiny, constant translations of your inner state into visible signals. In math, an ‘expression’ does something similar: it shows a hidden number relationship in a form we can actually work with.
