Definition
Made extinct or completely eradicated; no longer in existence as a species or group.
Etymology
Past participle of 'extinct' (from Latin 'extinctus,' past participle of 'extinguere' meaning to put out, quench). While 'extinct' is standard, 'extincted' is now considered non-standard or archaic.
Kelly Says
Grammarians debate whether 'extincted' is legitimate, but historical texts definitely use it—language itself evolves much like species do, and some word forms go extinct too!
