Extremes

/ɪkˈstrimz/ noun

Definition

The furthest or most intense points, conditions, or degrees of something. Things that are at opposite ends of a spectrum or beyond normal limits.

Etymology

From Latin 'extremus' meaning 'outermost, last', the superlative form of 'exter' (outer). The word entered English through Old French 'extreme', maintaining its sense of being at the furthest possible point or degree.

Kelly Says

Humans are paradoxically both drawn to and wary of extremes - we seek extreme sports for thrills while cautioning against extreme views. This tension reflects our evolutionary need for both safety and novelty, making 'extremes' a word that captures fundamental aspects of human psychology!
