Exurban

/ɛkˈsɜrbən/ adjective

Definition

Describing areas beyond the suburbs, typically characterized by very low-density development on large lots in rural or semi-rural settings. These areas are inhabited by people who commute to urban centers but prefer a more rural lifestyle.

Etymology

Coined by French geographer Auguste Spectorsky in 1955 from 'ex-' (out of) and 'urban,' describing the phenomenon of affluent professionals moving beyond traditional suburbs to even more remote locations while maintaining urban employment. The concept reflected post-war prosperity and automobile mobility.

Kelly Says

Exurban areas are where you'll find million-dollar homes on five-acre lots, complete with horse pastures and an hour-long commute to downtown! These areas represent the ultimate expression of wanting both urban jobs and rural lifestyles, made possible by remote work and long-distance commuting.
