Definition
To arouse, awaken, or rouse from sleep or dormancy; a very rare synonym for awakening.
Etymology
From Latin 'exuscitare' (to awaken, to rouse), from 'ex-' (out) + 'suscitare' (to rouse up). The root 'suscitare' also gives us 'susceptible' and relates to Latin 'citare' (to stir, to call).
Kelly Says
This beautiful but nearly extinct word appears in medieval and Renaissance texts as a poetic alternative to simple 'awaken,' suggesting that older writers had much more elaborate vocabulary for the subtle states between sleep and wakefulness.
