Definition
A direct confrontation or contest between two opponents; in hockey, the method of starting play by dropping the puck between two players.
Etymology
From 'face off', a phrasal verb meaning to face directly or confront. The hockey usage became standard in North America in the late 19th century when the sport was developing.
Kelly Says
The hockey 'faceoff' is one of the few sports terms that's genuinely poetic—two players literally facing off against each other, and the term moved into everyday language to mean any direct confrontation or showdown!
