From Latin familiaritas, from familiaris 'of a household or family,' from familia 'family.' The word evolved from describing household intimacy to broader knowledge and acquaintance by the 16th century.

The phrase 'familiarity breeds contempt' appears in Aesop's fables and suggests that knowing someone or something too well can lead to loss of respect, though modern psychology shows familiarity usually increases liking through the 'mere exposure effect.' The word beautifully captures how knowledge can create both intimacy and, paradoxically, dismissal.
