Famines

/ˈfæmɪnz/ noun

Definition

Plural of famine; widespread shortages of food causing extreme hunger and starvation in a population.

Etymology

From Old French famine, from Latin famēs (hunger). The word originally meant just 'hunger' but came to specifically mean severe, widespread food shortage.

Kelly Says

Famines are no longer primarily acts of nature—modern famines are almost always political, caused by war, trade restrictions, or deliberate policies. The Irish Potato Famine killed over a million partly due to British grain exports continuing during starvation.
