Fantasmagoria

/ˌfæn.tæz.məˈɡɔr.i.ə/ noun

Definition

A magical show or sequence of images that shift and change rapidly, creating a confusing or dreamlike effect.

Etymology

Coined in 1801 from fantasm plus the Greek agoreuein meaning 'to speak.' The term originally described a type of optical illusion show popular in 18th-century Europe using lantern projections, and evolved to mean any rapid succession of shifting images or ideas.

Kelly Says

The original Fantasmagoria was a literal show invented in Paris where 'ghosts' were projected onto smoke using magic lanterns—it terrorized audiences so effectively that people fainted, making it possibly history's first horror experience designed for entertainment.
