Definition
A style of absurdist or nonsensical art and writing that emphasizes the ridiculous and purposefully rejects conventional meaning or logic.
Etymology
A French art movement term from the early 20th century, derived from 'Dada' (the anti-art movement), combined with 'fata' (possibly relating to 'fait' meaning made/done). The repetitive, nonsensical sound reflects the movement's rejection of rational meaning.
Kelly Says
Fatagaga was literally artists saying 'our art is as meaningless as its name'—a radical protest against the seriousness of art after World War I. Artists like Hugo Ball created entire performances that were basically organized nonsense, and critics couldn't criticize because that was the whole point.
