Definition
Plural of fencing; barriers or enclosures made of wooden rails, wire, or other materials, or the sport and techniques of sword combat.
Etymology
From Old French 'fendre' (to defend/enclose) with the gerund suffix '-ing' (the action or result). Both meanings—physical barriers and the sport—evolved in parallel, with the martial art developing in Renaissance Europe and the physical barrier meaning spreading across English-speaking lands.
Kelly Says
Fencing as a sport and fence-building share the same root because they both come from the idea of 'creating a protected space'—whether it's keeping livestock in or keeping enemies out.
