Plural of fermium, a radioactive element created in laboratories that doesn't occur naturally on Earth.
Etymology
Named after physicist Enrico Fermi in 1952. The element was discovered by scientists studying nuclear reactions. The Latin suffix -ium is used for chemical elements.
