Figs

/fɪɡz/ noun

Definition

Sweet, soft fruits with thin skin and red flesh containing many small seeds, or the trees that produce them.

Etymology

From Old French figue, from Latin ficus. Figs are among humanity's oldest cultivated fruits, dating back over 11,000 years in the Middle East.

Kelly Says

Figs have a unique pollination relationship with tiny wasps that live inside the fruit - each fig species has its own dedicated wasp species. Many commercial figs are actually parthenocarpic, meaning they develop without pollination at all.
