Firefly

/ˈfaɪərflaɪ/ noun

Definition

A soft-bodied beetle that produces light through bioluminescence, typically seen flashing in warm summer evenings. Also called lightning bugs in some regions.

Etymology

Compound of 'fire' and 'fly', dating to the 16th century, describing the insect's flame-like light production. Despite the name, fireflies are beetles, not flies, and their 'fire' is cold light created by chemical reactions.

Kelly Says

Fireflies create light without heat through one of nature's most efficient processes - nearly 100% of the energy becomes light, compared to only 10% in incandescent bulbs. Their synchronized flashing in some species creates spectacular natural light shows that have inspired festivals and scientific research into biological communication.
