Fizzy

/ˈfɪzi/ adjective

Definition

Containing bubbles or carbon dioxide gas, creating a tingling or effervescent sensation. Describes carbonated drinks or anything that bubbles.

Etymology

From 'fizz' (imitative of the hissing sound of escaping gas) plus the adjectival suffix '-y'. The word 'fizz' appeared in English in the 1660s, imitating the sound of effervescence.

Kelly Says

The word 'fizz' is a perfect example of onomatopoeia - it literally sounds like what it describes! Interestingly, the 'fizz' in carbonated drinks is actually carbonic acid briefly forming and dissolving on your tongue, creating that distinctive tingle.
