Definition
A fish that is flattened from top to bottom and lives on the ocean floor, such as a flounder, sole, or halibut, with both eyes on one side of its head.
Etymology
Compound of 'flat' and 'fish,' a descriptive term used since at least the 15th century for these distinctive marine creatures. Named for their laterally compressed body shape.
Kelly Says
Flatfish are evolutionary marvels—they start life swimming upright like normal fish, but as they grow, one eye migrates to the other side of their head and they flip onto their side to live on the seafloor!
