Definition
The process or technique of reinforcing wood beams with metal plates; the practice of cutting or processing flitches.
Etymology
From 'flitch' with gerund '-ing' (Old English '-ing'), which converts verbs and sometimes nouns into gerunds (noun forms of action).
Kelly Says
Flitching is one of those specialized carpentry terms that shows how trades develop their own vocabularies—once you name a technique and the structures using it, you've essentially created a profession around it, which is why building trades have so many unique words.
