Definition
Wreckage or cargo from a ship that floats on water after the ship sinks or is wrecked.
Etymology
From Old French 'flotaison' (floating), derived from 'floter' (to float). The word evolved in maritime contexts to specifically describe floating debris, becoming standard nautical terminology by the 17th century.
Kelly Says
Flotson is the legal term for ship wreckage that floats—but there's also 'jetsam' (deliberately thrown overboard cargo) and 'lagan' (weighted cargo on the bottom), and maritime law treats each differently when it comes to salvage rights. Pirates and treasure hunters knew these distinctions well!
