Fluctuation

/ˌflʌktʃuˈeɪʃən/ noun

Definition

An irregular rising and falling in number or amount; a variation or change, especially one that occurs repeatedly. The act of wavering or oscillating between different conditions.

Etymology

From Latin fluctuare, meaning 'to flow like waves,' derived from fluctus (wave) and fluere (to flow). The image of ocean waves rising and falling became a metaphor for any irregular up-and-down movement in quantities, prices, or conditions.

Kelly Says

Picture 'fluctuation' as 'flow-ctuation' - like waves flowing back and forth! Stock prices fluctuate like ocean waves, constantly rising and falling. The 'flu-' root connects to fluid, flow, and flux - all about movement and change.
