Definition
The process of adding fluoride to water or other substances to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities.
Etymology
From fluoride (fluorine compound) + -ization (process suffix). Fluoride comes from fluorite, a mineral containing fluorine. The practice became widespread in the 1940s when scientists noticed people in areas with natural fluoride had fewer cavities.
Kelly Says
Fluoridization is one of the most successful public health interventions ever—it's been called one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century because it reduced tooth decay across entire populations without requiring individual action.
