Flutes

/fluːts/ noun

Definition

Long musical instruments that you blow air through to make sounds, or tall narrow glasses used for drinking champagne.

Etymology

From Old French 'flute,' possibly from Provençal 'flauta.' The word may derive from Latin 'flatus' (blowing), or from Arabic 'al-ud' through Romance languages. The glass meaning came later from the instrument's elongated shape.

Kelly Says

Flutes are one of the oldest instruments—archaeologists found bone flutes in caves that are over 40,000 years old, proving that humans have been making music almost as long as we've been making art.
