Definition
In a foolish or silly manner; in a way that shows a lack of good judgment or sense.
Etymology
From 'folly' (foolishness) plus the adverbial suffix '-ly'. 'Folly' comes from Old French 'folie' meaning madness or foolishness, ultimately from Latin 'follis' (bellows, empty-headedness).
Kelly Says
Medieval people used the exact same word to describe both a literal bellows that inflated air and the inflation of someone's ego—the connection between puffiness and foolishness stuck around for centuries.
