Definition
In Spanish-speaking regions, economic encouragement or development support; or historically, a warm medical application.
Etymology
Spanish word derived from Latin 'fomentum' (warm application). In Spanish and Portuguese, it evolved specifically to mean economic development or encouragement of commerce.
Kelly Says
In Latin America, 'fomento' is a whole government ministry dedicated to economic growth—the word evolved from 'warming something up' to 'warming up the economy,' a beautiful example of metaphor turning into policy.
