Food for thought

Definition

Something that provides mental stimulation or gives one something to think about seriously. Ideas or information that merit careful consideration or reflection.

Etymology

This metaphor treating ideas as nourishment for the mind dates to the 17th century. It builds on the ancient concept of intellectual 'digestion' of ideas, found in classical rhetoric and continued through medieval scholarship, where learning was often described in terms of consuming and processing knowledge.

Kelly Says

The brain actually does consume about 20% of our daily calories despite being only 2% of body weight, making this metaphor surprisingly literal! Different cultures have similar food-mind metaphors - Germans say 'Denkanstoß' (thought-push), while Japanese use 'brain food' concepts, showing how universal this connection between mental and physical nourishment is.
