Definition
Plural of footing; the base or foundation of something, literal foot placements, or the condition and grip of surfaces underfoot.
Etymology
From Middle English 'foting,' derived from 'foot' plus '-ing' suffix meaning 'the action or result of.' Footings became especially important in architecture.
Kelly Says
In construction, good footings literally prevent buildings from sinking—architects obsess over footings because they're invisible but absolutely critical, like how good punctuation works in writing.
