Definition
In a way that seems threatening or makes you feel unwelcome, like something warns you to stay away.
Etymology
From 'forbidding' (present participle of forbid) + '-ly' adverbial suffix. 'Forbid' comes from Old English 'forbeodan,' combining 'for-' (completely) + 'beodan' (to command). The '-ing' form gained the meaning of appearing menacing or uninviting by the 1700s.
Kelly Says
The word 'forbiddingly' creates a perfect image through sound—those hard 'b' and 'd' sounds make it feel sharp and unwelcoming, just like the meaning suggests. Language often mirrors what it describes!
