Forensics

/fəˈrɛnzɪks/ noun

Definition

The application of scientific methods and techniques to investigate crimes and legal questions, or the art of formal debate and argumentation.

Etymology

From Latin 'forensis' meaning 'of the forum,' where legal proceedings took place in ancient Rome. The word entered English in the 17th century referring to legal argumentation, then expanded to include scientific crime investigation in the 20th century.

Kelly Says

The word's journey from Roman public squares to modern crime labs reflects how legal proof has evolved from rhetorical persuasion to scientific evidence. Interestingly, high school 'forensics' teams still practice the original meaning - formal debate - while CSI shows have made the scientific meaning more famous.
