Foreship

/ˈfɔːr.ʃɪp/ noun

Definition

The forward or front part of a ship; the bow area and everything ahead of the midships section.

Etymology

Combining 'fore-' (front) and 'ship' (vessel). This nautical term has been used since at least the medieval period to distinguish the front section of a vessel from the aft (rear) and amidships (middle) sections, creating a three-part vocabulary for ship anatomy.

Kelly Says

The foreship is where sailors faced the most danger in storms because waves hit there first, so historically the least experienced sailors were often sent to work in the forecastle (the crew's quarters in the foreship), which is why the nautical term 'forecastle' became slang for chaos and confusion!
