Etymology
From 'forgo' (Old English 'forgan', meaning to pass by or abstain from) plus the agent suffix '-er' (one who does) and plural '-s'. The prefix 'for-' intensified the sense of passing something by.

The word 'forgo' became popular during times of rationing and sacrifice—forgoers were celebrated in wartime propaganda as people making the difficult choice to go without for the greater good.
