Definition
A colorless chemical compound formed from formaldehyde and ethylene glycol, used as a disinfectant and preservative.
Etymology
From formyl + -al (chemical suffix). This synthetic compound was developed in the late 19th century by combining formaldehyde chemistry with alcohol components to create a stronger preservative.

Formylal is essentially formaldehyde's better-behaved cousin—it does similar preservation work but without the nasty smell and toxicity that made formaldehyde famous (and infamous).
