Definition
A member of an extinct group of marine arthropods from the early Paleozoic era that had distinctive segmented bodies.
Etymology
From fornax (possibly referring to a furnace-like or distinctive bodily structure) + -id (suffix indicating belonging to a group). This is a rare paleontological term for an ancient creature with a notable physical form.
Kelly Says
Fornaxids were real creatures that crawled around ocean floors hundreds of millions of years ago, but they're so obscure that even paleontologists rarely mention them—they're basically the forgotten relatives of more famous ancient arthropods.
