Fostering

/ˈfɒstərɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Present participle of foster; encouraging the development or growth of something, or providing temporary care for children not one's own. Actively nurturing or promoting progress.

Etymology

From Old English 'fostrian' meaning to feed or nourish, related to 'fōstor' (food/nourishment). Originally referred to the care and feeding of children by non-parents, later expanding to mean any kind of nurturing support.

Kelly Says

Foster care systems trace back to medieval practices where children were sent to other families for education and training, not just because of family crisis. This 'fostering' was seen as beneficial cultural exchange, explaining why we still 'foster' relationships and ideas.
