Fowl

/faʊl/ noun

Definition

Birds that are raised or hunted for food or sport, especially chickens, ducks, and turkeys.

Etymology

From Old English 'fugol' (bird), the word originally meant any bird but gradually narrowed to mean domesticated birds used for food.

Kelly Says

Chickens are actually descended from the Red Junglefowl of Southeast Asia, and humans have been breeding them for over 8,000 years—making them one of the oldest domesticated animals, even older than dogs.
