Franchise

/ˈfræn.tʃaɪz/ noun, verb

Definition

A franchise is a business arrangement where one company allows another person or group to use its name, products, and systems, like a fast‑food chain branch. It can also mean the right to vote in public elections, especially in older texts.

Etymology

From Old French “franchise” meaning “freedom” or “privilege,” from “franc” (free). The idea of a special right evolved into both political voting rights and business rights.

Kelly Says

Movie ‘franchises’ like Marvel or Star Wars use the business meaning: a powerful brand that can be copied into many products and stories. In politics, when people fought for ‘the franchise,’ they were fighting for the right to have a say at all.

Gender History

“Franchise” historically referred to political rights such as voting, from which women were widely excluded; “women’s suffrage” movements fought to gain the franchise. In business, franchise ownership has also skewed male, though women have increasingly become franchisees.

Inclusive Usage

When referring to voting rights, acknowledge which groups were historically denied the franchise. In business contexts, avoid assuming franchise owners or leaders are male.

Empowerment Note

Women organizers were central to campaigns for the political franchise and have increasingly shaped franchised businesses as owners and managers.
