Functorial

/fʌŋkˈtɔriəl/ adjective

Definition

In mathematics, relating to or involving functors, which are mappings between mathematical structures that preserve their essential properties.

Etymology

From functor (a mathematical object) plus the suffix -ial (Latin -ialis). Functors themselves come from the Latin functus (performed).

Kelly Says

Functorial is the kind of word mathematicians use to sound properly technical—it appears in category theory, one of the most abstract and powerful branches of mathematics that even most mathematicians find dizzying.
