Fundulus

/ˈfʌndjʊləs/ noun

Definition

A genus of small, colorful freshwater fish including killifishes, topminnows, and mummichogs, native to the Americas.

Etymology

From Latin 'fundus' (bottom, because they feed on the bottom). The genus name was assigned by Linnaeus in 1766 for these bottom-feeding fish.

Kelly Says

Fundulus killifish are used in genetic research because they're tiny, breed fast, and can survive in extreme conditions. Your lab might have fundulus in tanks right now!
