Definition
Plural of furlong; a unit of distance equal to 220 yards or one-eighth of a mile, historically used for measuring land and race courses.
Etymology
From Old English 'furh-lang,' combining 'furh' (furrow) and 'lang' (long), literally meaning 'the length of a furrow.' A furrow was the standard length a plow could cut before turning around in a field.
Kelly Says
A furlong is exactly the distance a medieval plow could cut before the farmer had to turn around—so this unit came directly from what farmers actually did in their fields every day!
